The Beve Trophy 2010 - The Story

Team Tonner 7.5 v 4.5 Team Rush

Back to Ayrshire then for the third instalment. After a narrow loss in 2009, Captain Tonner was determined to finally get his hands on the trophy and stop Team Rush winning two years in a row. This determination seemed to rub off on his players with Team Tonner assuming a dominant position in the early stages of the morning greensomes over the Seafield Links in Ayr, eventually winning the session 4.5-1.5. This left Team Tonner only requiring 2 points to secure a first win and the opportunity to wrestle the Trophy from Rush’s vice-like grip.

The afternoon was a relatively tight affair but the heavy defeat in the morning ensured that Team Rush failed to pull back the points necessary to win the match and after good wins from Hare/O'Shea and Young/Bickley the cup was won and Captain Tonner finally got off the mark much to his relief, leading his team to a 7.5-4.5 victory. The Pish Cup was won by Strain and Hoy after they suffered two defeats on the day with Hoy becoming the most decorated player in Beve History with two cup wins and a pish cup in two trophy appearances. Clark and Bilton also walked off with the closest to the pin prizes, a new feature of the Beve.

The night out after the win was staged at the Balgarth in Ayr and they did the Beve Boys proud. A good feast was had by all with the usual number of heavily drunk men. These included Scott Thomson who finally took a drink at the Beve and unleashed chaos, (see Beve Legend 2010). Other highlights included Jim Goldie pinching the waiter's ass and filling the Trophy with a most delectable whisky.

The bus home featured another round of Beve singing with the Indy song coming out again. The jubilation was curtailed, however, when Adam Lee snapped the trophy in an effort to fix the infamous squint that the trophy developed after falling out of Captain Tonner's wardrobe before the first ever match. The Trophy then spent six months in recovery before finally being fixed. Captain Rush's disappointment at losing the trophy was relieved somewhat when Steve took a piss in the grounds of Kev’s neighbourhood enemy Destiny Church.
