The Matches - Match 28

2010 Fourballs - Ayr Belleisle
Clark/Law (Team Rush) beat Tonner, J/Weir 1up

Any excuse to use this photoThis was the second game out in the afternoon with Team Tonner only needing two points to secure victory and Captain Tonner was keen to provide one of them after last year's debacle. On paper the Law/Clark combination looked strong favourites against Tonner and Weir who had a record of being a bit wild off the tee. The first tee proved this as they both found the heavy rough on either side of the fairway with their openers, one left and one right. Tonner was lucky to find a gap in the trees but managed to three putt from 40 feet (a sign of things to come) to only get a half after Law and Clark had made a mess of it.

The next was halved in five after a wild Tonner pull. Team Tonner won the next couple after Tonner parred the third and nailed his approach to the fourth to one foot for birdie. Team Tonner went two up after five and looking good. The next two were halved in par with Weir holing some excellent putts and then parring the next to go three up but Clark and Law hit back over the next holes including a near hole in one at the 10th from Clark. The lead was maintained until the 15th when Tonner hit the green in two and was looking good but Law nailed a chip to put the pressure on Tonner who cracked in fine style to three putt to lose the hole. The next was halved in 7 after Tonner hit the water hazard with his drive, Weir hit the water from the middle of the fairway, Law played zig zag golf and Clark lost a ball in the rough. A hole to forget in a hurry.

By this time news was filtering in that Team Tonner had won the game after Bickley/Young and O'Shea/Hare had secured the winning points so the pressure was off. This did not help Tonner and Weir though who managed to make a right royal mess of the 17th to go all square then hack their way up the 18th where a great chip from Law put Tonner and Weir under pressure for saving putts which they could not convert. So Law and Clark took it one up with Clark especially relieved to stop the rot of losing four games in a row especially with being three down with five to play.
