The Matches - Match 7

2008 Fourballs - Troon Darley
Tonner, J/Wilson (Team Tonner) beat Montgomery/Young (Team Rush) 3&2

Scott prepares his shot from the rabbit holeAfter the morning defeat it was looking like an uphill battle for Team Tonner. The only good point was the dambusting antics of Goldie and Kealey wrote Team Tonner's half time speech and sent the opposition out roaring to get even. Inevitably this one started off in a flurry, Tonner and Monty halved the first in par after Tonner missed a five footer for birdie, the next was halved in bogey after Tonner messed up from the edge of the green. The third was won after Tonner and Wilson made tap in pars to finally go ahead for the first time in the whole day. The lead was short lived as Montgomery birdied the fourth. Tonner then parred the notorious 5th at Darley to get the lead back which was extended over the next couple of holes.

Now reading all this frenzied activity you will notice that there is a name missing - namely Young who was going about setting the Beve record for lost golf balls after hitting almost every tee shot in to the gorse bush. His only contribution for the first 12 holes was to deny Wilson a free drop when his ball landed deep in to a rabbit hole and was thus unplayable. Tonner parred the long 13th to get the lead back to 3 holes after a fight back from Team Rush. Ryan then creamed a 3 wood on to the 14th green to pull one back and they would be two down with four to play. Wilson who had been quiet for a while then awoke and parred the next to make it 3up then smacked a fine shot on to the green to seal the victory after his captain had led the way by pulling his tee shot in to the gorse bush. This point was enough to draw it back to 4-3 in Team Tonner's advantage - an amazing comeback that nearly ended in victory but for the pebble denying McGill on the 18th for a half. Oh, and let us not forget that it pissed down for the entire duration of the game, oh what a day in the Ayrshire sunshine!
