The run up to the inaugural Beve Trophy at Troon Lochgreen and Darley was dominated by the jamboy scandal involving Gumtree, Wikipedia and the Sunday Times. There were also last minute pull-outs by Kolacz and Walker, lots of trash talk and the teams were picked and re-picked on a number of occasions. Ryan Montgomery designed the spectacular website that Captain Rush maintains with colourful descriptions of all the Beve players and a record of past matches.
Finally, the teams got to the starting line with 16 players. Team Rush featured Clark, Shamash, Thomson, Young, Montgomery, Kealey and Goldie and Team Tonner with Hare, O'Shea, McGill, Davidson, Wilson, Tonner, E and Lee. The first shot of the day was meant to be hit by the Beve's founding father James Tonner but after Montgomery got lost on a boat it was left to Hare who pulled his drive into the left rough; an inauspicious start. The morning greensomes played over Lochgreen were dominated by Team Rush coming out with a 3-1 lead with Team Rush's shyest pairing Kealey and Goldie Dambusting down the 18th green in celebration.
The afternoon fourballs were a complete turn around from all the games in the morning, with Team Tonner winning every game that they had lost in the morning and coming within one tiny pebble in the way of a McGill putt of victory. So all the players came away with one point each and quite happy at their day’s work. Well, apart from Hare who argued furiously for a captains’ sudden death playoff, and Kealey and Goldie who, after their dambusting antics, managed to get a proper humping in the afternoon in an improbable 7&6 defeat which is not likely ever to be broken. Thus the first Pish Cup was obtained in a fashion that only Kealey and Goldie could ever manage.
After a monumental logistical snafu the players retired to the Ardneil Hotel, where the cup was filled with Tennent’s and Young refused to take a sip. After a few too many the bus picked the players up at the pub and the journey home largely consisted of a constant chorus of the Indiana Jones theme tune followed by 'Indy are you coming to the Shed?'. He refused, though some did accompany Tonner, J, Kealey, Montgomery, Young and Lee to the famous South Side hang out where Ryan worked on achieving his all-time knock back record. The night ended in a high note with a certain skinny Beve Player texting Andy one word at 4.30am: 'Shaggin'.
