Hare/Rush (Team Rush) beat Bilton/Clark (Team Tonner) 4&2
Aka the Darragh wedge match, the first game of BT2K9 started cagily, with Team Rush going 1up on 3 occasions before being pegged back each time. But then Darragh pulled out his shiny stick and made Bobert cry. Time after time on the back nine, he stiffed chips leaving Captain Rush with the key task of picking up the ball as it sat 2 inches from the hole.
The key moment came on the green of the par 5 12th when Bobert’s 3 wood approach shot left Team Tonner in good shape. Darragh’s drive and Kev’s 3 iron had left Team Rush 40 yards short of the green. Darragh did what Darragh does and Bobert collapsed in a heap (left). The end was in sight. A mercurial 9 iron pitch and run through the rough at the 15th and a majestic 8 iron to 6 feet at the 16th sealed the match. Team Rush picked up their first point on the way to a memorable victory.
