The Matches - Match 10

2009 Greensomes - Dullatur Antonine
Law/Walker (Team Rush) beat Davidson/Weir (Team Tonner) 4&3

Steve shows his patriotic fervour

This match brought a bit of Ryder Cup flavour to the Beve with the first appearance by an American in the tournament.  This came in the form of Steve "the Lawman" Law.  He was paired with work colleague Walker to take on the might of Davidson and Weir.  As promised by the prematch banter Steve had hired a cart for the day which may have been telling later in the round as the team Tonner pairing struggled round the mountainous terrain of the Antonine.  However, the sight of "two fat guys in a little cart" would have to wait until the afternoon match and one fat guy and a ginger guy trying not to fall out the cart took to the course.

In front of the onlooking gallaries both pairings got away reasonable drives at the first.  Law just managed to keep his beve t-shirt below his nipples when driving at the first before changing into some more fitting atire for the rest of the round, his favoured XXXL tall shirt size not being available in beve colours.  Weir and Davidson hit a slightly miscued approach to the right while Law hit his approach into the bunker.  In the blazing sunshine team Tonner's ball was somehow nowhere to be found handing the first hole to the team Rush pairing.  A solid par at the second took team Rush to 2 up as team Tonner struggled to find form.  The next few holes saw a fight back from team Tonner and the progress of team Rush was halted by some steady scoring.  The turnaround continued over the second half of the back nine and by the 8th team Tonner had gone 1 up despite not having the advantage of a buggy to haul them up the hill to the 7th.

The ninth then proved to be a turning point in the match.  The beve handicapping system meant that Law/Walker had a stroke at this tough uphill par 4.  With both teams putting for par Walker rolled in a 15 footer for a net birdie which brought team Rush back level going into the back 9.  Team Rush then went on to capitalise on a dip in form from their opponents stringing together a run of pars and a birdie at the 11th.  By the 15th the match was over as Davidson and Weir sucumbed to a 4 & 3 defeat bringing Law and Walker their first points of their beve trophy careers.
